I’m probably going to jail for copying and pasting this here. But I couldn’t help it. (That’s a good defense, right?) To see the real thing, go here.

Just discovered your blog today and have thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact I’ve spent the ENTIRE day sitting on my rear reading about Costa Rica, mostly at your site. After a bit of perusing I decided to start at the beginning (the big move) and work chronologically. I’m up through about August 2006. You are a gifted (and funny!) writer. Not a bad photographer, either. I’m looking forward to reading the rest. I recently got the idea in my head that I probably won’t be able to afford to retire in the last two places I’ve lived–Santa Barbara, CA and Honolulu–so I’d better start investigating places with similar beauty and lower prices. I also used to live in FL, by the way (Naples). My parents got me hooked on living in unaffordable places, but they’re otherwise great parents, and they’re the reason I’m here in Santa Barbara.
P.S. Even though I’ve been reading enough about Costa Rica lately to know what “Tico” and “Tica” refer to, those neurons weren’t firing when I first saw your name, “saratica.” I was mentally pronouncing it as a cousin of “sciatica” and thinking “what an odd name,” until eventually it turned into Sara-TEE-ca!
P.P.S. I really should have been working on my self-paced Spanish class homework today. I’ve done diddly-squat this semester, and the deadline is in 3 weeks. Reading your blog was SO much more fun. Since this comment is tacked onto a Dilbert cartoon, I’m reminded of a strip where the pointy-haired boss was getting on Wally about not completing some “self-paced” class or training, and Wally, sipping coffee, replied, “What part of ‘self-paced’ don’t you understand?”
Great Blog I really enjoyed visiting and wish I could up sticks and move to Greece like you have done to Costa Rica.
I’m so glad you are enjoying the blog, Chuck! I’m sure enjoying writing it. Costa Rica is still affordable, no question, even with runaway inflation. And most certainly compared to FL and CA! God, don’t mention self-paced to my teens… they’d be Wallys in a heartbeat. Look forward to hearing more on your retirement plans!
Mark, the only way we found the cojones to pick up and move was adversity. We had to do something! The whole process made easier by tricking ourselves into thinking it was just for a year. You can do anything for a year, right? Have you commented before? I know I’ve stumbled on your site somewhere before… great site for travelers!
